California is without a doubt the epicenter of the craft brewing renaissance. The first “craft” brewery arose in San Francisco when Fritz Maytag purchased and revitalized the Anchor Brewing Company in 1965. A little over a decade later, the country’s very first “microbrewery,” New Albion Brewing Company opened in Sonoma County.

California has the largest number of breweries in the U.S. with 279 brewing companies operating in 2007.

The CSBA membership represents the vast majority of craft beer production in the state and includes small brewpubs, large package production breweries – and everything in between. Membership is open to any brewery producing less than 2 million barrels (the federal definition of “small brewer” for tax differential purposes).

The CSBA is proud to represent the rich and diverse collection of artisans and entrepreneurs that make up the family of California’s small brewers.
