Hangar 24 Craft Brewery has graduated to the ranks of Regional Craft Brewery after brewing for less than four years.
On December 31st, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery broke the 15,000 barrel production mark and graduated from being classified as a “Microbrewery” to a “Regional Craft Brewery”. (A Regional Craft Brewery produces between 15,000 and 6,000,000 barrels of beer per year.)
The Craft Brewer’s Association recorded 1,767 Craft Breweries in the United States throughout 2010, of which only 80 reached the production levels of a Regional Craft Brewery. This statistic is a noteworthy testament to Hangar 24’s viral success especially considering that Hangar 24 has been in existence for less than 4 years with current distribution only spanning throughout Southern California.

Hops and beer are just about synonymous. I mean, most everyone knows that the use of hops in brewing beer is universal… right? Well apparently not.
Uncommon Brewers is certainly uncommon among California brewers. Unlike most West Coast breweries that feature hops in most of their beers, this Santa Cruz brewery does not.

Green Flash Brewing Company, a San Diego brewery known for inspiring deep devotion amongst its many followers will release Rayon Vert ™, a Belgian-Style Pale Ale, in January 2012. Rayon Vert is the product of a 4 year long development process and will be bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces, a wild yeast. Beer Advocate comments , “Because it is bottle conditioned, the beer will continue to change with age and there is no way to foresee what it will taste like after years in the bottle”. That’s a bold move.

A brand new 250bbl brewhouse being shipped to Lagunitas Brewing Co. as part of their major expansion project, hit a storm on the way into the eastern Caribbean. According to a Lagunitas Twitter stream, as the ship rolled back and forth by more than 40 degrees a crane came loose from its chains and crushed the brewhouse, sitting peacefully on deck. The 30′ diameter lauter tun caught the blunt of the attack, and appears to be a total loss.
Meanwhile two 40′ tall 750bbl fermenters just moored in Stockton CA port last night. Because they are too big to travel via truck, some components of the brewhouse will be barged as far as possible up the Petaluma River and then air freighted (that’s right — flown) via a “heavy lift” chopper.
Looking forward to seeing photos of a brewery flying over the city of Petaluma

What do you do with a pile of adobe soil? Tony Magee, founder and owner of Lagunitas Brewing Co., had an idea…
“The dirt needed to go somewhere,” he said. “All of a sudden it became apparent to me. It was exactly the right amount of material to create an amphitheater. In my mind, a stage appeared. There were no architectural plans at first; it was very impromptu.”
An estimated 300 people filled the venue as Tony Magee took the stage as the opening act for Texas-based singer-songwriter James McMurtry.

You may not have noticed it, but Rubicon Brewing is quietly raising lots of money for local charities. Their 501c Wednesdays have hosted a variety of organizations who get a cut from the daily till and a chance to promote their organization to the beer loving public.
This Saturday, Rubicon will host the Northern California Brewers Guild and the California Small Brewers Association for a fundraiser for the craft beer industry itself. Both organizations are active in promoting craft beer among consumers, businesses and lawmakers. The highlight of this event, without a doubt, will be the two silent auctions of rare beer. How rare? Some of these beers have never even been for sa
le to the public.
Autographed Life and Limb
If you are a collector of celebrity memorabilia and autographs, you’ll want to take home one of these bottles of Life and Limb, a collaborative beer between Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head. Both owners, Ken Grossman and Sam Calagione, have autographed the bottles. As they are both rockstars in the beer world and Ken’s autograph on items is pretty rare, these should fetch a good price.
A trio of Veritas, by Lost Abbey Brewing
If you, like many others, are going crazy for sour beers, you will want to take home a trio of Veritas from Lost Abbey. All three are barrel-aged, experimental sours that are generally only available for purchase from the brewery itself on a special release day. Get funky!
…And there are many, many more, including verticals of different vintages of cellar selections from Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, Ballast Point, Mad River, and North Coast, and special selections deep from the cellars of brewers across California. Beers are still trickling in to Rubicon, so there will be a number of surprises being added to the books until Saturday.
If this wasn’t enough, Rubicon will have specials on BBQ and guest beers all day long. Auctions will last from 1-4pm and 5-8pm.

For Immediate Release: August 24, 2011
First annual ‘Rare Beer Auction’ to be held in Sacramento
(Sacramento, CA) – Brewers from all over California are digging deep into the far crevices of their cellars to bring some of their most extraordinary, rare, and treasured beers to the public for the first annual “California Rare Beer Auction” to be held at the Rubicon Brewing Company in Sacramento on Saturday, September 10th.
These beer offerings are typically only known within a small circle of brewers and beer enthusiasts, and most have never been available to the public before. Proceeds from this silent auction will benefit the California Small Beer Association and the Northern California Brewers Guild - two important organizations that support and protect the California craft beer industry.
Some of the items being auctioned include: vertical flights of aged beers, a cuvee especial Belgian quad aged in a 56 year old brandy barrel, various ‘collaborations’ between multiple brewers, and multiple ‘wood barrel-aged’ beers. Most of the auction items are packaged in large, cork-finished custom bottles.
The bbq will be fired up on the Rubicon patio and, of course, a wide variety of beer will be available on draft. There is no admission fee, so come on down and head home with a beer that no one else will have ever seen before!
The Northern California Brewers Guild’s mission is to promote the common interests of their members and the licensed craft brewing industry in Northern California.
The California Small Brewers Association is the state trade association and acts to protect the political and legal rights of the California craft brewing industry.

ANAHEIM BREWERY GRAND OPENING ~ SATURDAY, JULY 16TH!
Anaheim Brewery will host its grand opening day celebration on Saturday, July 16 from 12 to 6 pm. Anaheim Beer, famous before Prohibition and a part of the German lifestyle in the early days of Anaheim, has returned after ninety years. Tom Tait, the mayor of Anaheim, will attend to mark the occasion. You may run into Lecil Slaback, 96 year old Anaheimer who remembers the old Anaheim Beer slogan: One for a nickel, Two for a dime, Get your beer in Anaheim!
Festivities include:
* Street food from neighborhood restaurants
* Mayor Tom Tait taps the ceremonial keg at 12:30
* Cake cutting at 3:30pm
* Hourly brewery tours
Using brewing techniques mastered over 17 years, owners Barbara and Greg Gerovac will introduce four award winning beers: Anaheim 1888, Anaheim Gold, Anaheim Red and Anaheim Hefeweizen. Fresh beer is once again flowing in downtown Anaheim, just as it did in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The Anaheim Brewery Tasting Room will be open from 11 am to 9 pm on Saturday.

SAVOR – An American Craft Beer and Food Experience descended on Washington D.C. last weekend for another sold out year.
Savor included 144 different craft beers from 72 small craft breweries with representation from many of the nations most well-regarded brewers.
Food pairing included artisan cheeses by American Cheese Society including, Cowgirl Creamery and Point Reyes. Among other offerings were sushi rolls, chocolate truffles and oysters - and of course plenty of good craft beer!
But the week’s activities weren’t all fun and games. On Friday many of the craft brewers in attendance “Climbed the Hill” to the Capitol to meet their Senators and Representatives to rally support for the “Small BREW Act” which would recalibrate excise taxes for America’s small brewers.

Green Flash Brewing Co. is ready to move to their new 45,000sf state of the art brewery in San Diego. The new location will house a custom built brewery, a 4,000sf tasting room and office space. Opening day is scheduled for June 1, 2011.
CEO Mike Hinkley said “We are so proud of the new brewery. It took two years of planning, nine months of construction and absolute dedication by the entire Green Flash team. Chuck and all of our brewer’s will bring the same passion and spirit to the craft, but will now have the tools available to ensure great quality and consistency in every batch while producing enough to satisfy the great demand for our ales. The added capacity will also allow us to expand into select new markets after we have fulfilled the orders within our current distribution area.”
Green Flash Brewmaster, Chuck Silva, added, “I’m very excited to have brand new, custom built, state of the art brewing equipment to brew on in our new facility in San Diego. While the new equipment will help improve our quality, efficiency, and throughput it will also give us the ability to expand the line up with new releases, and extend our seasonal and specialty offerings in the bottle as well as on draft. It really is a dream come true to brew beer at this level and on this scale, allowing me to share my craft with so many people.”
The Green Flash tasting room in Vista will close its doors on May 29, 2011 with a farewell/customer appreciation Party party.

The Brewers Association today released 2010 data on the U.S. craft brewing industry. Small and independent craft brewers saw volume increase 11 percent and retail sales dollars increase 12 percent over 2009, representing a growth of over 1 million barrels (31 gallons per U.S. barrel), equal to more than 14 million new craft cases.
“Beer lovers increased their appreciation for American craft brewers and their beers in 2010,” said Paul Gatza, director, Brewers Association. “Craft brewers’ stories resonate with Americans who are choosing small, independent companies making delicious beers in more than 100 different styles.”
The Association also reported a growth in the number of U.S. breweries, with eight percent more breweries than the previous year. In 2010, there were 1,759 operating breweries. Craft brewers produced 9,951,956 barrels, up from an adjusted3 8,934,446 barrels in 2009.
“Prohibition caused a dramatic decline in the number of breweries in the United States, but the number of breweries is now at an all-time high,” added Gatza. “With well over 100 new brewery openings in 2010, plus 618 breweries in planning stages, all signs point to continued growth for the industry.”
In 2010, craft brewers represented 4.9 percent of volume and 7.6 percent of retail dollars of the total U.S. beer category. The Brewers Association estimates the actual dollar sales figure from craft brewers in 2010 was $7.6 billion, up from $7 billion in 2009.
Overall, the U.S. beer industry represented an estimated retail dollar value of $101 billion. U.S. beer sales were down approximately one percent, or 2 million barrels, in 2010 compared to being down 2.2 percent in 2009. Total beer industry barrels dropped to 203.6 million, down from 205.7 million barrels in 2009. Imports were up five percent in 2010, compared to being down 9.8 percent in 2009. (Note: the Brewers Association does not count flavored malt beverages as beer.)
Gatza added, “We also found that three percent of craft brewer barrels, by volume, are distributed in cans, confirming a growing trend.”

“BATTLE OF THE BARREL” PITS AGOURA MICROBREWERY AGAINST MALIBU ESTATE WINERY
This much th
ey agree on – Malibu Family Wines loves beer and Ladyface Ale Companie loves wine. Ladyface even worked with Malibu’s vintners to create the Ladyface Cuvee, a blend of Malibu’s Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah varietals, served exclusively at the popular Agoura Hills brewpub. It was all friendly, cozy even, until someone suggested putting Ladyface beer in Malibu Family Wines’ barrels.
It was decided that Ladyface La Trappistine ale, a dark, rich, malty Belgian dubbel, would be aged in a Semler Syrah French oak barrel with fifty pounds of fresh Syrah grapes from the Semlers’ Malibu Estate. It then enjoyed a secondary fermentation and maturation for several months, imparting dryness and complexity. In fact, purported Ladyface, the barrel-aged Trappistine would taste better than plain Syrah wine. “Not so, beer geeks”, responded Malibu. “W(h)iners”, replied Ladyface. And thus began the Battle of the Barrel.
From March 26th to March 29th, guests at both establishments will be able to purchase sample tasters of the 2008 Semler Syrah and Ladyface Ale Companie’s ’08 Semler Syrah barrel-aged La Trappistine and cast their votes. *
The winner will be announced at a Battle of the Barrel Finale to be held Tuesday, March 29th from 4:00-6:00pm at Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie. A total of 150 tickets are available, 75 at Ladyface and 75 through the Malibu Family Wines website. Attendees must be 21 years of age or over. There’ll be music, voting and, no doubt, a lot of last-minute campaigning by both sides.

Sierra Nevada Brewing will start canning Sierra Nevada Pale Ale for the first time later this year.
Bill Manley, a spokesperson from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. had this to says…
“Our canning line should be in the building near July 4. It will be a couple of months to get it up and running, but should start seeing Pale Ale in cans in late 2011.
We’re on the fence about what other beers to release, but I think we’ll have a couple of different brews available. Cans will only be a small part of our output, but we’re excited to see how they’re received.
There are so many places where you can’t or won’t bring glass…up here in the foothills it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to bring a bunch of bottles with you in your backpack! This is really the reason we’re going for this.
Right now we’re thinking can-conditioned. All of our bottle Pale Ale is bottle conditioned so it makes sense. We need to do some serious QA trails of all available options before saying anything for sure.
No chance of bottled Pale Ale going anywhere. Cans are in addition to, not in place of.”

Stone’ Brewing Co’s head Brewer Mitch Steele teamed up with Green Flash Brewing Co.’s Chuck Silva and Pizza Port Carlsbad’s Jeff Bagby to create

“Green Flash/Pizza Port Carlsbad/Stone Highway 78 Scotch Ale” (named after the 18 mile stretch of asphalt that unites us) is an atypical creation for all three breweries. It’s a very malty (read: NOT HOPPY) style of beer that we formulated with three different crystal malts, chocolate malt, and English pale malt to provide a rich, bready body. East Kent Goldings and Target hops provide a very modest backbone of peppery hops, but the flavor is unequivocally malt-driven. Scotch Ale yeast and a touch of raw sugar called sucanat add a distinctive complexity to this hefty 8.8% abv beer.
Stone’s President and Brewmaster Steve Wagner takes a sip, and offers his thoughts: “Kind of the point of the collaborations is to do something we wouldn’t normally do at Stone… and this is 180 degrees from what we would normally do. It’s great. I love it.”

San Francisco Beer Week starts Friday, February 11th. One of the largest and earliest such market-specific craft beer celebrations in the nation, it highlights some unique opportunities the nation’s 30-something beer weeks provide. Traditionally, the week’s focus has been celebrations at brewery tap rooms and brew pubs. But in 2010, breweries and distributors starting asking their accounts to prioritize American Craft Beer Week, according to the BA’s Julia Herz. It makes sense: San Francisco’s event, for example, will showcase newsworthy events like nanobrewery introductions and ever-popular collaborations, according to Magnolia Pub and Brewery owner Dave McLean.
“This is a grassroots celebration to its core with no national advertising so participation is organic just as growth of the craft beer segment has been,” said Julia, who will reveal more about national-level American Craft Beer Week later this month.

Ron Lindenbusch of Lagunitas Brewing chats it up with Mr. Micky Hart at the Inaugural Reception
In a nod to the craft brewers of California, Jerry Brown requested that only craft beer from California be served at the Inaugural Reception that was held following the swearing in ceremony on Monday in Sacramento.
This is a proud moment for our industry. We deserve recognition as a growing, thriving, valuable and premier industry in our great state.
We have much work to do in increasing the awareness and appreciation of the vast contribution our industry provides the state. But that journey is accomplished one small step at a time, and having the Governor acknowledge our industry in this way is a good step forward.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is recognized for its environmental leadership in the brewing industry. Since 1980, the company has consistently implemented sustainability policies and projects that reduced the company’s environmental footprint across all of its operations. The brewery implemented a zero-waste policy — diverting 99.5 percent of its solid waste from the landfill through source reduction, recycling, and composting. Sierra Nevada has made significant investments in renewable power, which now supplies 85 percent of the company’s electricity needs.
The company has reduced its water use year after year, and has also implemented an innovative water recycling program. Beyond its own operations, the brewery is working with its suppliers and partners to reduce the impact of their products. Sierra Nevada is the largest buyer of organic hops in the country, and established a “Farm with your Brewer” program to encourage small hops farmers to adopt sustainable practices. From field to bottle, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company strives to maintain a healthy balance between environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic stability.

Ladyface Ale Companie announced plans to double its annual craft beer production capacity, up from 600 barrels in 2010 to a projected 1,200 barrels in 2011. The company recently took delivery of new 15 barrel brewing vessels at their facility in Agoura Hills, California.
“With the arrival of new brewing tanks, we’ll have the means to keep more of our regular ales on tap as well as brew special and seasonal ales”, said Brewmaster David Griffiths. “It is very gratifying that demand outstripped production capacity in our first year of operation. This will also allow us to increase availability to wholesale accounts”, added Cyrena Nouzille, General Manager of Ladyface Ale Companie.
Ladyface Ale Companie was established in late 2009 along with its restaurant Ladyface Alehouse & Brasserie. Their regular ales include La Blonde, La Blanche Wit, Blind Ambition (Gold Medal – 2010 L.A. International Beer Competition), Trois Filles Tripel, Ladyface IPA, Chesebro IPA (Bronze Medal – 2010 L.A. International Beer Competition), La Trappistine Dubbel and Picture City Porter. Seasonal and special occasion ales such as Bluebelly Barleywine and Dérailleur bière-de-garde are also brewed. Ladyface is the Conejo Valley’s only microbrewery and gastropub.

Chico, CA – Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. announced a donation of $91,075.50 from the 2010 “Wild Rivers” campaign to help preserve vital waterways across the country.
For every 12-pack of Pale Ale and Sierra Nevada seasonal beer purchased in the U.S. from August 1 through September 17, 2010, Sierra Nevada donated a portion of proceeds to Western Rivers Conservancy and River Network.
“Our beer is a product of our surroundings,” said Ken Grossman, Founder and President of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and a longtime supporter of river conservation. “Sierra Nevada is not just the name of our brewery, but also a place with its own unique environment. We strive to do our part in protecting that environment for generations to come.”
The “Wild Rivers” partnership, which was visible at retailers across the nation, aimed to raise awareness and increase stewardship of rivers that sustain our communities and ecosystems.
“Sierra Nevada has blazed a trail of environmental stewardship,” said Phil Wallin, President of Western Rivers Conservancy. “We are proud to partner with such a great company to advance our mission to protect the great rivers of the West.”
Founded in 1980, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is one of America’s first microbreweries and remains highly regarded for using only whole-cone hops and ingredients of the highest quality. Sierra Nevada has set the standard for artisan brewers worldwide as a winner of numerous awards for their line of beers and ales.
Western Rivers Conservancy protects outstanding river ecosystems in the western United States. We acquire land to conserve critical habitat, provide public access for compatible use and enjoyment, and cooperate with other agencies and organizations to secure the health of whole ecosystems.
River Network envisions a future when every person is an active caretaker of their local, river, lake, stream or bay. We work for a day when all people have access to clean plentiful water. River Network is helping build a powerful new water protection movement in the United States.

Shaun O’Sullivan of 21st Amendment Brewery of San Francisco has made a little wager with Frist Rahr of Rahr & Sons Brewing of Arlington,Texas that when the Giants win the World Series, Fritz will be donning a Giants jersey and taking a photo drinking of himself drinking a 21st Amendment beer in front of the Rangers home stadium at Arlington Field.
In the highly unlikely off-chance that the Rangers win, Shaun will be wearing a Rangers shirt in front of AT&T park while drinking a Rahr & Sons beer.

Do you know what makes Friday October 8th, 2010 so special?
Well today is the 34th anniversary of the incorporation of New Albion Brewery , the first California brewery to obtain a new license after prohibition.
Previously located on Eighth Street East in Sonoma, New Albion Brewery was launched in 1976 and reportedly was built from scratch using old dairy equipment and junkyard parts.
Founder Jack McAuliffe, an engineer by trade, launched New Albion and was one of the first pioneers in the craft beer revolution. Jack had been in the Navy and spent time in Scotland and when he returned to California he found “a paucity of good beer” and set out to do something about it. The brewery closed around 1982-1983.
Many consider New Albion to be “the first modern craft brewery” and hold it’s memory in high esteem.
Happy Anniversary New Albion Brewery!

As expected, the SF Board of Supervisors failed to overturn Mayor Gavin Newsom’s veto on a proposed alcohol fee. That’s good news for the beer industry.
The sponsor of the measure, S.F. Supervisor John Avalos failed to obtain the needed votes to override the veto.
John Avalos proposed the tax on liquor wholesalers, winemakers and breweries as a means to cover what the city spends annually to treat alcohol-related problems, from treatment to ambulance rides.
The measure was hugely unpopular with bars and liquor stores, who said they would have to pass the cost on to customers,
Stay tuned.

Angel City Brewing, the award-winning local microbrewery is moving to its new location in Downtown Los Angeles. Michael Bowe, Founder, President and Masterbrewer, announced that they have signed a lease for the historic John A Roebling Building located at 216 S Alameda St. in the heart of the Downtown Arts District. With over 27,000 square feet and 50 parking spaces, the brewery is poised to become the dominant craftbrewery in its new vibrant urban setting. “While we are anxious to get back into production filling keg and bottle orders for our distributors, we also plan to incorporate a beer tasting area, gift shop and music venue.”
Michael started Angel City Brewing in 1997 after winning the “California Hombrewer of the Year” award in 1995 and 1996. In 2004 he purchased the Alpine Village Brewery in Torrance, on Ebay. Formerly a general contractor, Michael lovingly restored this classic German built brewery and added a bottle filler. “I brewed every batch of beer that came out of that brewery and I still, after all these years love to make beer.”
The German built brewery, originally located in Alpine Village, is the oldest microbrewery in all of Southern California originally installed in 1988. With a yearly capacity of over 12,000 barrels, the new brewery plans to expand into the new space by adding new fermenters and serving tanks.“I’m excited about making and serving new and unique beers on-site at the brewery. Nothing tastes better or fresher than a beer poured right from the serving tank.”
It shows, Angel City Brewing has won Seven Gold and Two Silver Medals at the “Los Angeles International Beer Competition” the last two years.“My vision for Angel City Brewing is about being located in Downtown Los Angeles, I think a great city deserves a great brewery and we’re hoping to become that.”

Some California craft brewers have been receiving inquiries from beer enthusiasts regarding the role that the California Beer and Beverage Distributors (CBBD) is taking in opposition to Prop. 19, the initiative to legalize marijuana.
The CBBD is the trade association representing beer distributors in California. The members of the CBBD are independent beverage distributors and are not directly associated with craft brewers. Many craft brewers contract with beer distributors to deliver their products to retailers, but the CBBD does not represent in any way the political interests of the craft brewing community or individual breweries.
The craft brewers of California are represented by the California Small Brewers Association (CSBA). The CSBA does not take a stance on non-industry related issues and has no stated position on Prop. 19. Additionally, the CSBA is strictly a grass roots organization. We do not contribute PAC money to any initiative or make campaign contributions to any candidates.

Swedish and Finnish divers have discovered possibly the world´s oldest beer in a shipwreck in the Åland Sea, east of Stockholm. It was in the process of salvaging what is believed to be the world´s oldest champagne as several beer bottles also were discovered.
All the cargo on the ship — including the beer and champagne — is believed to have been transported sometime between 1800 and 1830.

Fortuna, Calif. – Congressman Mike Thompson of California’s 1st Congressional District visited Eel River Brewing Company in Scotia, CA on September 1st, 2010.
Eel River CEO Ted Vivatson invited Representative Thompson to tour Eel River Brewing during the Congressman’s most recent visit to his district and took the opportunity to inform him about both the difficulties currently facing craft brewers, as well as some of the benefits and rewards of running a craft brewery.
Congressman Thompson supports both the House Small Brewers Caucus (formed in 2007) and H.R. 4278 (excise tax reduction legislation) which are both in place to give craft brewers a greater chance to succeed.
“As a craft brewer, an organic craft brewer, we’re targeting a niche market and it can be hard to compete with the big guys,” explained CEO Ted Vivatson. “We really appreciate what Congressman Thompson is doing here; it gives us a chance to be competitive and has really helped our company grow.”
Eel River Brewing Co. is the first certified organic brewery in the United States and is currently certified organic by both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). They produce eight year-round styles of beer as well as seasonal beers. Not only does Eel River Brewing Co. have a commitment to handcrafted, traditional, organic beer, but they also believe in sustainable practices. The brewing facility is a reclaimed redwood lumber mill and is powered by bio-mass power, a 100% renewable energy.
In addition to the brewing facility in Scotia, California, Eel River Brewing Co. has a pub restaurant in Fortuna, California which features the largest beer garden on the California North Coast. The Eel River Brewing Co. pub serves locally produced and organic foods as much as possible and offers all of their year-round beers on tap. The pub is open 7 days a week and is located at 1777 Alamar Way in Fortuna, California.
The California Small Brewers Association is a 501(c)6 non-profit trade association protecting the political and legal rights of the California craft brewing industry. The primary role of the CSBA is to monitor these issues at the state Capitol and to employ our industry’s voice as needed. The CSBA acts as one coherent and powerful voice for all small brewers in California.

Thirsty Bear invites you to join them for a special press tour and tasting of Locavore Ale at 5 pm on August 24, 2010. This is their first 100% Bay Area beer made from Eatwell Farm’s malted barley (Dixon, CA) and Hops-Meister Farm hops (Clear Lake, CA). Eatwell Farm will also provide its organic heirloom tomatoes for the event prepared by Thirsty Bear’s chef Jessica Gorin. You may arrange a tour and tasting the week prior to the release up to and including the release date by contacting brewmaster Brenden Dobel at brewery@thirstybear.com or founding brewmaster and owner Ron Silberstein at ron@thirstybear.com.
With a renewed emphasis on local, sustainable food, why should beer be any different? This is the thought behind Thirsty Bear, Eatwell Farm’s and Hops-Meister farms joint effort to make beer from commercially available, locally grown malted barley. “It’s a model for brewing beer with commercially available and locally sourced ingredients,” says Ron Silberstein.
“We’ve made beers with locally grown organic hops, but our organic malt comes from Canada, England, or Germany,” explains ThirstyBear head brewer Brenden Dobel. “Moving California brewing forward requires us to start using organic malts that are locally grown.”
The brewery-restaurant serves Spanish cuisine sourcing its products locally and using a contemporary, seasonal approach to traditional Spanish tapas and paellas. It is located at 661 Howard Street, San Francisco, California adjacent to the SF MOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts and Moscone Center.
Seventy-five years ago Prohibition destroyed California’s small malt houses and barley production. Since then, local breweries have had to rely on malted barley grown in the Midwestern plains states, Canada, or Europe. Barely is trucked to giant, industrial malting facilities and then trucked to the brewery. This industrial system creates a big disconnect between a local craft brewery and its ingredients. A few pioneers are trying to restore the local malt house to American craft brewing. “Our friends at Colorado Malting Company are hand malting small batches for us while we develop a malt house on the farm,” explains Goldsmith.

This year, the Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s 7th Annual Beach to Brewery raised $13,000 for the local chapter of The Surfrider Foundation, with more than 2,000 guests celebrating the event. Beach to Brewery featured 21 different beers on tap and took place at Karl Strauss’ main brewery in Pacific Beach.
Festivalgoers enjoyed an impressive line-up of 4 local bands while tasting original beers. Karl Strauss brewers led private brewery tours through their recently expanded facility. The San Diego Bike Club organized over 200 guests who rode their bikes from Pacific Beach to the brewery.
In addition to the donation, Karl Strauss supported Surfrider’s “Rise Above Plastics” campaign and eliminated the use of more than 17,000 plastic cups during the event. “We understand that Surfrider values our monetary donation, but just as important is the awareness we raise for their cause,” says Matt Rattner, president and co-founder, Karl Strauss Brewing Company.

Spring 2010 means a time of growth at Hangar 24 Craft Brewery, where the remodeling of the existing building across from the Redlands Municipal Airport will help double brewing output from 8,000 barrels to 16,000 barrels a year by the summer.
A job fair is set for May 23 from 1-5 p.m. There will be up to four beer tenders and two tour guides hired. Additional jobs to fill include a cellarman (an assistant in most brewing duties) as well as a delivery driver, but those jobs aren’t being filled via the job fair.
“Growth is a good sign for the brewery, but it’s also a pleasant sign for the local community that we are able to add jobs,” Hangar 24 owner Ben Cook said. “If we continue at our current growth rate, more expansion and more hiring is projected in upcoming years.”
Currently, the brewery employs 25 people.
Hangar 24′s 2nd Anniversary celebration, June 5th will take place at the brewery from noon-7 p.m. Visit here for more details

Colorado brewer looks to build new brewery on West coast
New Belgium Brewing Co., brewer of Fat Tire and many other craft beer brands is looking at California to build a new brewery as it nears capacity at its Fort Collins plant.
The company, which experienced an 18 percent growth in 2009, is considering a second, smaller regional brewery and bottling plant to help meet demand in other states.
The Fort Collins brewery produced 583,000 barrels last year. Its capacity is 850,000 barrels.
If NBB were to go forward with plans for a new brewery, it would operate with a maximum of 250,000 barrel capacity according to the company.

Or, how big is small?
Boston Beer Co., the largest craft brewer in the country is pushing an unusual selling point in new ads: Its own insignificance.
In an ad spot titled “Growing Up Small” it sets out to dispel the notion that it accounts for a significant portion of U.S. beer sales, asking drinkers in a series of documentary-style interviews how big they think Sam Adams’ share is.
Twenty-five percent, guesses one. Huge, says another. At that point, the brand’s actual market share flashes across the screen: 0.9%. That’s right. One in every 100 beers consumed in the US is a Boston Beer Company product – most of which is of course Sam Adam’s.
And how big is #2? Or, how small is #2 I should say. Pretty darn small. Boston Beer will push about 2 million barrels out the door this year (one barrel equals 31 gallons. I don’t have a calculator handy so I’ll let you do the math). The second largest craft brewer in the country, our very own Sierra Nevada Brewing Company will sell about 700,000 barrels, well less than half of Boston Beer. Pretty small.

Number 2. Big, but small.
